There was a large coronal mass ejection (CME), a significant geomagnetic storm, and as a result, auroras were visible throughout Germany last night. Particularly at the northern coast, but also decently in Berlin. Very impressive.

Lots of great photos online (I have seen from Germany, UK, NL, DK, FR). It was even faintly seen in southern Spain (Granada)! Very impressive. I am sure this will at least make the regional news tonight. Solar Wind activity is still elevated, but has significantly decreased since last night. The peak was around 2025-01-19 21:20 UTC.

I am not an expert on this, but the SW speed increased drastically last night. The space plasma people should love it.

Edit: I underestimated the impact; a short segment with aurora photos even made it into German national prime-time news. People love it.
